Some of my favorite, recent books I’ve read.

No Perfect People Allowed - John Burke

This book is amazing!  It is a great philosophy of ministry that really stresses the importance of people.  Also, it’s very much like Jesus’ way of meeting people where they are, not expecting them to clean themselves up before they come to Christ or even come to church.  Prophetic and almost condemning on the type of church which expects people to change in order to get the power to change…

Christless Christianity - Michael Horton

This follows up perfectly the statement about changing without the power of change.  Horton’s Christless Christianity expresses the idea that most churches are teaching something other than Christianity, something he calls “Therapeutic Moral Deism” meaning 3 things.  Therapeutic – we’re here to make your life better.  Moral – we’re here to teach you to be a good person.  Deism -  we’re here to teach you there is a god.  This teaching, though, is a long ways from the gospel, the saving life, death, and resurrection, of Jesus Christ.  Throughout the book he speaks of a few major leaders (Osteen, McLaren) for specifics on how this comes out in their teaching.  Very Good Read.

Death by Love - Mark Driscoll

Unbelievably and unashamedly pastoral, practical, and gospel.  Mark Driscoll, in Death by Love, explains the cross and how it relates to every day situations.  He shows that it is way more than a "get out of hell free card" but a practical, life changing gospel that infiltrates every area of life.  He deals with all sorts of problems and the answer is always the gospel!  I’ll admit, I’m about half way through it, and it’s already on my list of best books ever! Read it.  The end
